Sheldon Adelson, bogeyman

Update: Somebody returned the favor by hacking into Las Vegas Sands‘ Web sites, taking out several home pages and posting inflammatory imagery. “The sites also featured a list of confidential employee information and Social Security numbers, reported the Las Vegas Sun. Details of the cyber-attack continue to emerge.

Sheldon Adelson‘s newest panic tactic began airing yesterday. It’s so derriere-garde in its Red Scare methods, you expect the announcer to yell, “The Russkies are coming!” Ironically, by stressing the convenience of Internet gambling the TV spot makes it look that much more appealing. Las Vegas Sands‘ own internal money controls have drawn federal scrutiny, so Mr. Glass House is the last person who should be throwing stones. However, Adelson isn’t known for his ironic side, hence these over-the-top bogeyman ploys.

The American Gaming Association-backed Coalition for Consumer & Online Protection is taking its fight to Capitol Hill, seeking federal regulation. One supposes, with Adelson stirring up trouble in Washington, D.C., that the AGA and its allies have to push back, but this is a battle that will be won or lost at the state level. That’s where the genie has left three bottles and is trying to get out of several more.
