Since we’ve been talking about Archon Corp. this week — and because I didn’t want the last post of the week to be about feet — here’s an old ad for the Wet ‘n Wild water park, whose closure really diminished the Strip, in ways both obvious and subtle. Maybe the Lowden family made more moolah renting it out as a holding pen for Fontainebleau construction — these days, probably not — or extracting endless option renewals from would-be could-be might-be (but maybe not) developer Christopher Milam. Still, a lot of Las Vegans miss it and while this TV spot would never have won a Clio Award, it gives a pretty good sense of what the place was like. Enjoy.

Ahh, memories. I used to go to Wet ‘n Wild in the early 1990’s when I alternated between the LV Hilton and The Mirage.
Maybe they could hang one of them slide thingies from the Harmon Tower, sorta making lemonade from $billion lemons?
i wonder would orlando style amusement parks do well here?
Although now might not be the time, I always wondered why Clark County didn’t use some of their vacant land and help jump start a new water park on the Strip. Even if they had to own it and partially subsidize it (water parks are useless for a good part of the year), they’d get a lot of visiting from locals.
Heck, I’m surprised there aren’t more public pools in this city PERIOD. You would think SNWA would have been cheerleading for that, back when it mattered, that private backyard pools be discouraged and people be offered public facilities instead.
Er, I meant to say a new water park OFF the Strip.
The Henderson Multigen pool complex off of Green Valley Parkway is great–it’s not exactly a water park, but they do have a huge water slide that kids love, and several pools for different age levels. It’s a shame there aren’t more like it in other parts of town.
